About Carolyn Berry

Hello!

If you have turned to this section you are probably looking for someone to help you work through some difficulty in your life and want to know something about me.

It has been my privilege to work in the mental health field for over 32 years. I was drawn to this field following some trying times that included losing myself and then exploring and discovering who I am and what I want for my life. That was some 36 years ago.  One of the things I discovered was that I wanted to be of service. I just didn’t know how. It was during my healing journey that I met a phenomenal woman who happened to have schizophrenia.  She shared her journey with me, teaching me about surviving unimaginable pain and about a world that most of us do not experience. Our friendship was built on trust and openness. I learned the meaning and rewards of authenticity, unconditional acceptance, and a non-judgmental attitude. One day she looked at me and said, “Carolyn, you are a natural therapist. That’s what you should do”.  It rang true. I decided to pursue it. It took time. I had a family. I went to school. I worked. And, eventually, I completed my BS degree in Human Services from CSU Fullerton.  I worked. I went to school. And, eventually I completed my MA degree in Marriage, Family Therapy from California Family Study Center (AKA Phillips Graduate Institute). In 1992 I received my Marriage, Family Therapist license from the State of California.  Over the years I have experienced my therapeutic skills evolving in sync with of my personal and professional growth.

My work is influenced by my Native American lineage and the spiritual teachings that have enriched my life.  I believe in the substance of all of the Creator’s creations and in the interconnectedness, balance and harmony of every part of being.  My philosophy is based in humanism and influenced by transformational, energy, mind-body psychology.  It’s my contention that you and I are a team. We co-create a supportive safe environment built on mutual respect and trust. We work together to develop and establish goals and methods to reach them.  A variety of therapy techniques based on your temperament, experience, strengths, needs and goals may be applied to address any combination of the following:

  • Developing and increasing insight
  • Learning effective communication skills
  • Discovering how to manage internal and interpersonal tensions and conflicts
  • Learning to alleviate or eliminate symptoms of emotional distress
  • Changing attitudes and behaviors to improve interpersonal functioning
  • Personal growth and development
  • Healing aspects of life damaged traumatic events.
  • Overcoming Depression and Anxiety

I am passionately committed to help you identify and change what’s not working positively in your life.  I provide effective supportive services with empathy and compassion for couples, individuals and families
My specialties are:    Relationship Issues
                                     Family Issues
                                     Women’s Issues
                                     Men’s Issues
                                     Identity Issues
                                     Recovery Issues
                                     Depression
                                     Anxiety

I have a long and strong history working with people in recovery programs who are blocked from getting fully into a life free of pain due to a history of trauma and abandonment.  Too often people in recovery will get caught up in cross addiction, switching addiction from and to any of the following drugs, alcohol, spending, gambling, sex, love, work or eating/ self-image disorders.  It is not easy getting into full recovery and receiving the “promises”, as described on page 83 of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, and sustain a life of joy free from the desire to turn to the familiar pattern of addiction.  It is, however, very possible.   It just depends on where you put your attention.

TWO WOLVES - A Cherokee Tale

One evening an old Cherokee Grandfather told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, ‘My son, the battle is between two ‘wolves’ inside us all.  One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.  The other is good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.’ The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: ‘Which wolf wins?’ The old Cherokee simply replied, ‘The one you feed.’
